San Francisco

Chad and I are going to San Francisco at the end of September sans kids and need your advice on what to do there. We have never been, so any hints as to restaurants, must-see sights, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

My favorite city. Oh my. Where do I begin? We bought the Frommer's 2006 San Fransisco when we went in...2006 so and it treated us right, so I would get the 2009 edition.

A place that we talk about all the time, still to this day:
Dottie's True Blue Diner. OH. MY. GOSH. The best breakfast I have ever had. I just remember some Cinnamon Pumpkin French Toast that literally made me cry. But be prepared to wait. The place is tiny but so worth the wait. And the weight. Hohoho. We also went down to Fishermans' wharf and had a delicious lunch. There's really good sushi there, if you're into that...which I know you're not so never mind. Just keep your eye out for Zagat rated restaurants--they'll be a sticker in the window. Other than eat our way through the city, we did a lot of shopping, looked at a lot of cool art galleries, took a little cruise underneath the bridge and just walked around and felt the city's vibe. I want to live there. Oh, I'm so envious you're going!

One of my favorite cities, hands down.
1. Eat at Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory
2. Eat clam chowder in a bread bowl down by the pier
3. Go to Alcatraz (very touristy but it really is cool... and Chad will get a kick out of it!)
4. Take pictures with all the freaks. There is bush guy, who hides behind a mini bush and then jumps out and scares people. He is my favorite!
5. Go shopping @ Union Square. They have a 4-story Nordstrom. Need I say more?

follow up question... we're going to be staying in a place on fisherman's wharf. do we need to rent a car, or will everything be within walking/subway distance?

A ride on the trolley is a must if you have never done it! And I really liked the Alcatraz tour. China town is awesome if you want some fake designer purses. Chocolate ice cream treats at Ghiradelli Square is a must, too! My husband knows San Francisco like the back of his hand, so call if you want details!

One tip is that you can come see your pals the wiltbanks, I hear they're pretty cool. And forward any other tips to us -- that pumpkin french toast sounds great!
