My December:I got an email from Layers Clothing telling me my shipment had been sent. I emailed them back and told them I had never ordered anything. They wrote back and said it was my exchange order. I wrote back and said I had never exchanged anything. A few days later I got this shirt in the mail. I wrote them again and told them I had never ordered the shirt. After a week or so of no reply and a moral survey among family and friends I decided to keep it.
This was Rylee's expression throughout her entire preschool Christmas program. I've decided we won't be going to any more of those.
Ignore the unflatteringness of this picture of me and and just know that I have been so excited to have my sisters visiting me this week. Although their trip was far from ideal (see below), we've still managed to have some fun girl time. After paying for her own plane ticket, poor Jamie had to be picked up from the airport by a strange man (no offense, Matt!), wake up (and I mean this in the most literal way possible) by being vomited on by Avery who was on pain meds), and then babysit nonstop as I went to various doctor's appointments. Oh yeah, and clean my house and wash my floor, etc., etc., etc. Do you think they'll ever come visit again? I don't think it's likely...Which brings me to these: The night Jamie came I was cooking dinner. Avery pulled up a chair to the counter near the stove to help. Being the completely accident-prone child that she is, (Bull in a China Cabinet is how my mom often describes her...) she slipped on her chair and to break her fall, grabbed the pan that held my Italian Chicken dinner with a boiling sauce of tomatoes and chicken broth, dumping it on her face as she fell, complete with the pan landing on her face. Both she and I were screaming as I put her in the sink and proceeded to spray cold water all over her face, which only made her scream louder. After watching her face start to peel off and the entire thing fire engine red I threw her in the car and headed for the Urgent Care 1 block from our house. They called an ambulance and after a lot of tears, a failed IV, and a shot of pain medicine, she rode in an ambulance with Chad downtown to the Children's Hospital, while I went home and cried some more, imagining my baby's ruined life and scarred face.
Thankfully, the burns were all 1st and 2nd degree. This is Day 4 and she looks world's better already. As you can see, she is healing nicely and the doctors think that with a regimen that includes a lot of lotion, massage, and sunscreen for about a year, she should be scar free. We will pray that they are right. In the meantime, we feel like we live at the plastic surgeon's office and the nightly routine of bandaging and constant application of Bacitracin is getting old real fast... But mostly we are so grateful that it wasn't worse and we were able to act so quickly.

Selena, your ornament is going to be very late. Sorry.

Wow- kate, that's so scary! I would've freaked out. And I don't even know where I would rush the kids to - nowhere is all that close. Good job on acting fast. I'm glad she's ok. And so fun to see a pic of you and your sisters!

I don't know who I feel more bad for - you or Avery??! Burns are one of my worst nightmares, especially seeing that just last week, my 1 year old neice pulled my sister's hot flat iron off the counter and it clamped her arm like tongs. I'll spare you the detials, but to get it off required ripping of skin. Her arm looks a lot like Avery's face, but worse (all 2nd degree) and I can imagine the wrapping and bacitracin getting VERY old. Thankfully she will heal.

P.S. Layers are my FAVORITE shirts, but their customer service is lacking on organization. I seriously think that company loses more money than they know about. Anyway, glad you kept it. I have a shopping list ready to order myself and that is sheer laziness seeing how the warehouse is 35 minutes away.

Oh my gosh! At least Avery looks happy in the picture with the popsicle. I don't think I'm going to let Leland play in the kitchen while I cook anymore.

We hope she heals quickly.

You poor thing Katie, I am so sorry. I can't even imagine how horrible that must have been. My friend spilled hot oil all over her hand and had 2nd degree burns and she didn't scar at all so I'm sure Avery will always be gorgeous.

I am so sorry for both of you. It sounds like her face will mostly heal, but your memories must be really difficult.

Glad to hear that she is doing much better.

Chad and Katie-
My mom told Carissa and I about Avery the other night- she had heard about it from your mom. We were very glad to see that she is doing well and that she had no 3rd degree burns- my mom said at the time you weren't sure. We hope she continues to get well and you recover from the scary experience as well.

PS- you are missing the jergensen cookie party this saturday- see what happens when you move away!

Chad and Katie,
It's amazing to see how resilient children are! Look at her smiling even with all those owies! I'm glad she is healing well. Sam had to get stitches on his forhead when he was 2 -- and I was really worried about it being a bad scar but I think it's healed really well now. I was paranoid about keeping it out of the sun, lathering on the vitamin E and mederma -- but it worked! Sorry you had to go through that!
