Highlights from Ave's "Sur-gee"
  • Avery's surgery took place at Dell's Children's Hospital, which is an amazing, brand-new, super-nice hospital. The nurses were so nice!!! Everyone went out of his or her way to make sure Avery was happy and comfortable. Let's put it this way: people in Texas are the opposite of people in Baltimore.
  • A big surprise came after the surgery (which was supposed to last an hour and then 2 hours of recovery), when the doctor decided he wanted Avery to stay overnight because he was worried she would be in too much pain and should stay hooked up to some morphine. Unfortunately, I hadn't planned my babysitting accordingly; but my friends Keri and Jill came through fabulously for me. '
  • Jamie was a great sport about dropping me off at the hospital to stay over with Aves and then navigating the streets of downtown Austin at 1:00 am by herself, after I picked her up from the airport and didn't have the energy to drive her to my house and then back to the hospital again...
  • Getting about an hour of sleep in the hospital.
  • Discovering that Avery sucks on her tongue (loudly) when she sleeps. This must be how she learned to get over her pacifier.
  • Listening to a two-year-old's hospital demands:
Avery: "I want a popsicle."
Me: "May I have a popsicle please."
Avery: "Get me a popsicle."
Me: "May I have a popsicle please."
Avery: "Give me a popsicle! I want a popsicle!"
Me: "Avery, if you can't talk nice, you don't get anything.
Avery: "Get the doctor! The doctor will get me a popsicle."
  • Watching Avery waste about 10 popsicles a day, and then cry hysterically when she discovered their melted corpses hours later. Then demand another one. Then repeat the vicious cycle.
  • Having Avery ask for the doctor to come lay with her (instead of me) when I was putting her to bed in the hospital.
  • Waking up to Avery at 5:00 am demanding to sit in her wagon.
  • Catching Avery's vomit in a plastic bowl in the children's play area
  • Sweet relief at getting released from the hospital and watching my child return to normal after being weaned off the morphine and getting home. I was starting to worry I was in a Eugene O'Neill play.

I'm glad that everything went well and you guys are home...what a nice hospital!! That's every mother's dream to at least have their kids treated well and happy when they are having surgery/staying over at the hospital. One more reason to move to Austin right?!

Glad you are now home and everything went well! What a trooper for such a little person! You did great too Katie! Hopefully you can all get some rest and relax a bit. I wish I could deliver at that hospital. I think my experience will be a bit different! Happy Recovery!

Looks like all is well! I know it means SO MUCH when the nurses and doctors who care for your child are nice, concerned, positive, and happy. As a mother, it means the WORLD! Sounds like you guys got great treatment for Avery! I'm so glad. Hope all continues to go well.

I'm so glad you didn't have to share a room with a young mom from the inner city that decides to watch gangster movies at 2am really loud with a lot of bad language in it (Balt vs. TX). Can't wait to see the results. Does this mean she'll be able to wear skimpy bathing suits after all? I remember this was a consoling thought of yours when she came home from the hospital after being born :-)

She is such a pretty little character! I love two-year-old personalities. I'm glad everything went well and that you received much better than B-mo service. That will be one really nice thing about moving next year!

Glad that all is well. I bet you are glad to have it behind you. So did you bring your wagon, or do they just have those at the hospital too? I loved that she drove herself to her surgery.

the hospital had the wagons there. it was really fun pulling her around the halls in one of those while dealing with IV cords...

What a fun hospital. It looks like she got great care there. I hope she's recovering well. Kids are so resiliant, it's crazy. She looks great in the pictures--comfortable and happy. Anyway, I've been meaning to call you and I will soon.
