I hope I'm not boring you guys with decorating stuff. I am just so clueless! I really want to start infusing some color to my house because so far all I have going on is brown: brown cabinets, fireplace, couch, carpet, stairs, etc. I don't really know how to start picking a color scheme. I a leaning towards a light bluish color because I've never used blue, and I think it's pretty--but I don't know if I should save that for the bedroom someday and go with something else. Plus, I don't want it to be all blue and brown, so I don't know what else to add... green? yellow? and I don't know how to do this. All I've thought of so far is painting the dining room blue (the floor plan is really open, so you'd be able to see it from both the entry and the family room, putting a blue and brown rug in the entryway, and adding some sort of blue curtains in the family room and possibly another rug with blue in there.
I really don't know what to do. And style-wise I'm lost too! Any ideas on color schemes, what you think would look good with my house, or what's in style would be ever so helpful.
And what do you think of this rug for the entry? Is this too fancy/old? I can't decide how modern to go. I'm sort of an in between girl. But I lean toward a fresher look with bolder colors... But I like everything.

I thought you said you wanted more color. This rug is brown! And old ladyish. I'm very against this rug. Keep looking. But I'm enjoying these decorating posts because I'm living vicariously through you obviously.
I don't really care for the rug either-too brown. Target actually has some really nice colorful area rugs that you might want to look at-that's where we got our red one from.
What kind of blue are you thinking? Dark blue, light blue?
Personally, I love the green that we have on our front room walls-I can't remember what it is called, but it's a khaki green kind of color (not camo green-it's lighter than that). It's neutral enough that you can add another accent color to the room and not have it look ridiculous. Ours is red, but I think yellow would be pretty too-not sure if blue would go. If you want the exact name, I've got a paint chip wheel and can look it up for you. I'm just too lazy currently to get off of the couch.
Oh yeah Kate-I was gonna tell you this on the phone yesterday too, but I forgot...my favorite thing to have on my walls are family pictures or pics of Jakson blown up really big. You can get 11x14 prints from Shutterfly for about 9 dollars and then just pick up a frame at Hobby Lobby when they are 50% off :) You could even fill your niches with a large one. I'll send you a couple of pictures of things I've done with photographs if you want....just let me know.
