the panels are each 36" L x 9" W x 3 3/4" D. the niche is around 70" L from the highest part of the arch down, and around 59" L if you just count the straight part (if that makes sense) and around 36" wide.
Yeah I think the panels are really cool looking, I like them. But I also thought they looked like they might be a little small for the space. Generally you want to fill up wall space a lot more than you might think. That's what they always do in model homes and professionally decorated places. They really fill up a space.
I think the panels would be a great idea, but yes, they need to fill up most of the niche space. If you found some that were taller, you could put them up against the two sides of the niche, and do a cool vase with flowers or sticks or tall grass in the middle.
Ok i thought of 2 other things you could do there: 1. Have some shutters custom made to fit the area (expensive but cute) 2. If the niche is deep enough you could still do a vase on the left side and then do 3 pictures on the right (stacked one on top of the other) each with a picture of your girls.
how wide is your shelf? i vote a vase of some sort with tall/large flowers of some sort. does that "sort" of help?? easy way to add some color to the area.
My sister placed the same kind of thing on her wall and I think that it looks really nice. It sounds like you are up to your eyeballs in this whole decorating thing.

What are the measurements of the space and what are the measurements of the candle thingee? That would make a huge difference to me.

Do you think those panels are too small?
well they look cute to me but it sounds like they might be a little small.

Yah, the panels are probably too small. Do they come any bigger?
